was developed to specifically support Providers through the

process.


Becoming a Direct Support Professional can make a world of difference in the life of a person with developmental disabilities. Supports are available to both Independent and Agency Providers serving in Wood County.

Contact your Wood County Service Coordinator and request a Provider Search be conducted on your behalf. Provider Searches are sent out to both Agency and Independent Providers who are currently certified in Wood County.

Provider Guide Plus

This is an online resource for rating providers of services for people with developmental disabilities in Ohio. Provider Guide Plus is updated daily by DODD with Certified Agency Providers. This easy-to-use-tool can help you to select a provider and help improve services for people with developmental disabilities. It allows you to rate your provider and learn how other providers have been rated.

HOW TO BECOME A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL

There are two ways to become a Direct Support Professional:

Agency Providers

are organizations who have employees that work in a variety of settings such as residential, employment, transportation, day services, and drop-in support. Agencies provide Direct Support Professionals with:

  • Flexible schedule
  • Regular pay periods
  • Benefits
  • Trainings/certifications
  • Billing

Independent Providers

are self-employed and gain certification to provide support to Individuals as Direct Support Professionals.
Being self-employed and certified through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities allows the Direct Support Professional :

  • The ability to be flexible with their schedule
  • Choose who they are working with
  • Manage their own billing
  • Maintain their own trainings/certifications.

WOOD COUNTY PROVIDER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES 2024

WCBDD values educating Direct Support Professionals to provide the best quality of care to the people who live in Wood County. Below, you will find detailed training information for 2024. 

VIEW 2024 TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES HERE

The Request for Training Initiative Reimbursement Program is intended to assist DSP's or their employer serving the people of Wood County with reimbursement of $25.00 per hour for their time to attend training they are typically not reimbursed for. This specifically includes training that is offered by WCBDD or prior approval is received from outside training. Trainings offered by WCBDD that are eligible for this program include New Independent Provider Orientation, Annual Trainings, Positive Supports First, DSP Onboarding, Customized DSP Trainings, Medication Administration Courses, and/or trainings required for the Competency Based and Longevity Add-On DSP Incentive. This program has limited funds and will be honored while sufficient funds exist. Participating providers will be notified via email upon the exhaustion of Training Incentive Program funds.

Wood County Board of DD – Behavior Support Training

Positive Supports First

Positive Supports First explores various positive strategies designed to help direct support professionals (DPSs), provider management, agencies, and independent providers to understand why challenging behavior occurs, address the motivation behind the behavior, and how to alter the learning environment in order to improve overall quality of life. These classes are offered free by the Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

The Positive Supports First UPDATE Training is for current DSPs who have already completed the PSF General training and need to complete their annual behavior support requirement. Please note that in order to register for the PSF Update training, participants must have already completed the PSF General Training. If it has been over a year since the participant took a PSF training, they must re-enroll in the PSF General Training.


Positive Supports First Train-the-Trainer Courses

The Positive Supports First (PSF) Train-the-Trainer course provides participants with the necessary knowledge and tools to train on Positive Supports First. Positive Supports First Instructor certification is valid for one calendar year from the date that the certificate is issued. In order to become a certified PSF Instructor, participants must have already completed the PSF General Training. Instructors are responsible for registering for the PSF Train-the-Trainer Renewal Course and completing it prior to their certification expiration.

Wood County Board of DD – CPR & First Aid Training


CPR and First Aid certification is required for all Direct Support Professionals including both Independent and Agency Providers. The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities requires an in-person skills assessment for CPR and First Aid certification. The Wood County Board of DD offers CPR and First Aid for all providers serving Wood County people at a reduced cost of $23.50. The cost of the course includes 8 hours of in-person training, the course book, and an e-card. Currently, the cost is waived for Independent Providers serving those who receive Wood County services. If you have physical conditions that might prevent you from participating in the course, the instructor will work to accommodate your needs within the stated course requirements.
