THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO BECOME A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL:
AGENCY PROVIDERS
Agency Providers are organizations who have employees that work in a variety of setting such as residential, employment, transportation, day services, and drop-in support. Agencies provide DSP's with:
- Benefits
- Billing
- Flexible schedule
- Regular pay periods
- Trainings and certifications
INDEPENDENT PROVIDERS
Independent Providers are self-employed and gain certification to provide support to individuals as DSP's. Being self-employed and certified through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities allows the DSP:
- Choose who they are working with
- Maintain their own trainings and certifications
- Manage their own billing
- The ability to be flexible with their schedule
DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS help individuals in so many ways.
They implement person centered plans and document services.
They transport people to work, appointments and activities.
They provide personal care to bathe and dress, provide safe transfers to and from wheelchairs, etc.
They schedule and obtain appropriate medical and dental care for people they serve.
They assist with banking and budget management and make sure people have what they need.
They plan meals and provide cooking instructions.
They respond to mental health emergencies and provide behavioral supports.
They administer medication and treatments and document according to delegated nursing standards.
They connect people with friends and natural supports in their communities.
