was developed to specifically support Providers through the
process.
Becoming a Direct Support Professional can make a world of difference in the life of a person with developmental disabilities. Supports are available to both Independent and Agency Providers serving in Wood County.

HOW TO BECOME A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL
There are two ways to become a Direct Support Professional:
Agency Providers
are organizations who have employees that work in a variety of settings such as residential, employment, transportation, day services, and drop-in support.
Agencies provide Direct Support Professionals with:
- Flexible schedule
- Regular pay periods
- Benefits
- Trainings/certifications
- Billing

Independent Providers
are
self-employed
and gain certification to provide support to Individuals as Direct Support Professionals.
Being self-employed and certified through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities allows the Direct Support Professional :
- The ability to be flexible with their schedule
- Choose who they are working with
- Manage their own billing
- Maintain their own trainings/certifications.

WOOD COUNTY PROVIDER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
WCBDD values educating Direct Support Professionals to provide the best quality of care to the people who live in Wood County. Below, you will find detailed training information. Please refer to the Training Calendar above to register for trainings.
MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION RECORDS RETRAINING (MAR)
Review certification information on what you can do and not do as a DSP, agency, or IP for medication administration to include IST, 6 rights, 3 checks, pill identification, sample MAR with identification of the problems. This training takes place on the second Thursday, every three months, from 10:30AM to 11:30AM. Please refer to the Training Calendar above to register.
DSP SIDE-BY-SIDE TRAINING
DSPs are required to have eight hours of annual training which includes six hours of other topics per rule. Side-by-side training offers an opportunity for DSPs and people served a shared learning experience for one hour per month which can count towards this requirement. Each month covers a topic relevant to services and is presented by staff members from the WCBDD. Certificates of Completion will be provided to DSPs. Learning experiences will be available in differing formats as locations depend on training topics. All side-by-sides take place during programming hours. EMAIL OR CALL TO SET UP TRAINING TODAY!

DODD MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION CERTIFICATION COURSES
Category 1 and Category 2 Initial and Renewal Classes
These classes are offered by the Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities and at this time are offered free of charge to Providers.

Wood County Board of DD – Behavior Support Training
Positive Supports First
Positive Supports First explores various positive strategies designed to help direct support professionals (DPSs), provider management, agencies, and independent providers to understand why challenging behavior occurs, address the motivation behind the behavior, and how to alter the learning environment in order to improve overall quality of life. These classes are offered free by the Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
The Positive Supports First UPDATE Training is for current DSPs who have already completed the PSF General training and need to complete their annual behavior support requirement. Please note that in order to register for the PSF Update training, participants must have already completed the PSF General Training. If it has been over a year since the participant took a PSF training, they must re-enroll in the PSF General Training.
Positive Supports First Train-the-Trainer Courses
The Positive Supports First (PSF) Train-the-Trainer course provides participants with the necessary knowledge and tools to train on Positive Supports First. Positive Supports First Instructor certification is valid for one calendar year from the date that the certificate is issued. In order to become a certified PSF Instructor, participants must have already completed the PSF General Training. Instructors are responsible for registering for the PSF Train-the-Trainer Renewal Course and completing it prior to their certification expiration.

Wood County Board of DD – CPR & First Aid Training
CPR and First Aid certification is required for all Direct Support Professionals including both Independent and Agency Providers. The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities requires an in-person skills assessment for CPR and First Aid certification. The Wood County Board of DD offers CPR and First Aid for all providers serving Wood County people at a reduced cost of $23.50. The cost of the course includes 8 hours of in-person training, the course book, and an e-card. Currently, the cost is waived for Independent Providers serving those who receive Wood County services. If you have physical conditions that might prevent you from participating in the course, the instructor will work to accommodate your needs within the stated course requirements.
